Cylinder Types: Single- and Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders
Hydraulic cylinders come in many different types depending on the specific requirements of the machine and environment that they will be working in. Broadly speaking, cylinders can be divided into two main classifications, which is based on the way that the hydraulic fluid acts on the piston.
Single Acting
Fluid is pressurised from only one side of the piston in single acting cylinders, so they rely on an external force such as a spring, load or even gravity to return it back to its original position. These cylinders are commonly found in internal combustion engines such as petrol and diesel engines, external combustion engines such as steam engines, and a range of pumps and hydraulic rams.
Double Acting
In a double acting cylinder, hydraulic fluid provides pressure in both directions. Double acting cylinders are most commonly found in steam engines and in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders where force is needed in both directions. They can work at any angle and provide exceptional control over the rate of travel in both directions.
